There is one main reason for this. In god-centric religions, worship is done to please God, to save oneself from His anger, to ask Him for favours. People think of worship in that way. But in Buddha Dhamma, worship is never done for this reason. Prayer, in that sense, has no place here... Using the same word 'worship' causes a lot of mental confusion. Because we live among people who follow god-centric religions, their ideas influence us deeply, often without us realizing it. So, even if we leave those religions, when we think about worshipping the Buddha, we still carry those old meanings. We must first let go of that. Who was the Buddha?Lord Buddha was a human being, but he was not an ordinary human. He was an 'Enlightened Human'. We must remember this. According to Buddhism, the existence of such an enlightened human—who had perfect wisdom, limitless friendliness, and was the living symbol of great compassion—is considered the highest existence in the world.That is why such an enlightened human is worshipped. We worship the Buddha with a feeling of gratitude because he created the ideal of enlightenment through his own efforts and showed us the path of what we, as humans, can become. He is worshipped not as a god, but as a teacher, an ideal, a guide. Therefore, this is not blind worship like the worship of a god. What is the meaning of 'Worship' (Puja)?Lord Buddha said in the Mahamangala Sutta: "Puja ca pujaniyanam etam mangalamuttamam." This means: "To honour those who are worthy of honour is the highest blessing." When respect is very deep, it is called 'worship' (puja). Worship is done for those who are worthy, for an ideal. By bowing with humility (namaskar), we develop the ability to absorb the influence of that ideal. With this receptivity, we can learn, understand, and get inspiration to shape our lives accordingly. So, worship is understood as an act of respect and reverence. This kind of worship is not found in god-centric religions. There, worship is often based on complete dependence on God, trying to please Him with offerings to gain His favour, or fearing His anger. That worship does not increase receptivity or inspire knowledge and self-transformation. It is an action arising from fear, greed, or ignorance. So, it doesn't truly benefit a person. Therefore, Buddhist worship is different from the worship in other religions. Here, you do not ask the Buddha for anything, nor are you afraid of him. Furthermore, recognizing the similarity between us and the Buddha, we see the Buddha as our own fully developed potential. This creates a feeling of respect and responsiveness in our minds towards that ideal. This feeling is called faith (shraddha). But this is not blind faith. To express this faith through action, we do greetings, worship, and veneration.
Another important pointWorship is connected more to a person's heart and emotions than just their head. Worship is the first step to creating pure, positive, and receptive feelings. It is a part of faith. Among the five spiritual faculties, the first one is faith (shraddha). Its development is connected to worship. Through such mindful worship, faith in the ideal of Buddhahood becomes stronger, and we get inspiration to bring that ideal into our own lives. Without humility, there is no receptivity. Without receptivity, there is no learning. Similarly, without worship, there is no strong faith. Without faith, there is no practice of Dhamma—progress towards enlightenment is not possible. The Symbolism of OfferingsThere is an ancient tradition of offering flowers, lamps (light), and fragrance (incense) before a Buddha statue.
Therefore, by performing worship and veneration, our faith in the ideal of Buddhahood is strengthened, and we constantly receive inspiration to practice the Dhamma properly. |
